Trunking at HF? ...and you've left out encryption and FHSS...

This is the only thing that will do what you want,
http://www.winradio.com/home/g305i.htm with the trunking option installed.

there are plenty of SSB units but nothing on trunking at uhf. getting both
in the one box LOL...

Ty for the Link Mike. Ill look into it as it may well be the answer.

Note that for the Winradio, you also need a computer. I would think that a
good trunk scanner and a separate HF receiver would be a far better bet. You
simply cannot have a really good front end on one receiver with that
bandwidth IMHO. Also bear in mind that much current trunking will be
encrypted shortly.

To cut a very long story very short, in trunking the control channel is
monitored and its continuous stream of code is translated to instructions to
switch the scanner to any given frequency to hear a (usually) voice message.
So the trunk scnnner needs to receive two frequencies. The control channel
and as well whatever voice frequency is being announced by it. You could do
it with two scanners, one controlling the other via a computer, but
obviously the best way is with a trunk scanner, which is a scanner that
listens to the control all the time and switches amongst the voice
frequencies. You can get the full manual for eg the Bearcat 396 on the Net
and learn more.

Re overseas scanners in Australia, the trunking systems used in Australia
are overseas developed (eg Motorola) so syetmwise no problems. But the
scanner needs to be set to the actual frequencies used in Sydney or
wherever.

Actually the way the band plans are setup are different for the USA &
Australia, especially the 800Mhz segment. In the USA they have locked out
part of the 800Mhz band as their cellphone network sits right in the middle
of where a lot of the trunking networks here in Australia sit.

That would probably be the 996XT or 396XT. Unfortunately I doubt that we'll
see these models here in Australia, unless Uniden Australia pulls it's
finger out of it's arse and decides to reverse it's decision not to import
them (which would be a miracle).

Mick, in a nutshell what will the 396XT do that the 396 does not? BTW, I
am very happy with my 396. Does everything I want it to.

Absolutely right. But by 'set to the actual frequencies" I mant the whole
caboodle. The fact is the the 396 for example will scan eg Aus GRN systems
if set up with the right parameters. Not sure (and not in that place at the
moment) but I think the Australian sold manul is Australianised...

Some trunking systems are compatible and some aren't
the main commercial system is MPT1370 which are not comaptible with
trunking scanners
the GRNs are using a Motorola type system which are

you can use trunking software with a non trunking scanner, the scanner
has to be controllable(AR2800 is) has to be connected to a computer

If you search Google for trunking software
there are a few free ones and a few you have to pay for
last trunking software I downloaded was a DOS program, that's how long
it's been since I played with it

I expect someone has written a Windows one by now

Scan Cat Gold 8.5 apparently has Trunking support now
but I'm unsure if it just supports trunking scanners or what
