Police and GPS

Been listening to the local country cops and was wondering, do they
use GPS at all ? The reason I ask is because quite a few cars have to
call dispatch to help locate streets. The dispatch sometimes has to
get the old UBD out - lol!

Also, I heard one transmission where the dispatch asked the car if
they had an MDT and they replied "yes, but I wish it would work!" LOL!

the UBD used at the comms centre is software on their system
they type in the name and it comes up with the map page and reference
UBD integrated into their dispatch, they have had it for many years
I have a couple of UBD software CDs here, 10 years old now though

some use GPS others don't

They would rather receive instructions en-route than waste precious
minutes fiddling with a GPS. Unfortunately this is just another
indicator of a loss of local knowledge where neither the young copper
or the dispatcher is familiar with the neighbourhood. They used to
know every backstreet and alley.

and their "tenure" policy which ensures they are rotated out of any
patch they are familiar with doesn't help them - or us.

They use Google Maps or Google Earth over here (Southwest Vic\VKC Ballarat)

On this topic, does anyone know aboout the R(ural) A(mbulance) V(ictoria)
tracking system?
I hear Sierra Whiskey Geelong stating the movements and locations of some
vehicles on "the screen" as they are being tracked.

Sounds like an APRS type thing.

Who uses Google maps???
UBD will be more up to date than any Google Maps
when you need reliable up to date maps for emergencies 3 year old maps
just wouldn't cut it

Google maps is outdated shit and GPS is too unreliable.

Imagine the cops turning up for a hold-up alarm and finding a dead end
street instead :)

They're playing with peoples lives - not that I'm surprised. Around
here the cops are using good 'ol UBD directories.
