Good luck getting anything out of them. Just remember if Paypal refuse
to help, your bank CAN issue a chargeback to Paypal, on the grounds
that the refused to assist you in a refund. Happened to me, and
successfully got back $400 direct from the bank.

I had a similar experience when a Korean porn site startd charging me *every
month* through my bank account when I tried a 'one-off' as research for a
book I was writing many years ago. My bank not only cancelled the direct
debit from operating, it achieved a refund of all the prior charges. Only
problem. I hade to change email addresses as the mailbox became clogged with
a shoal of Korean spam!

Wasn't that the excuse offered by an ageing British rock star when he
was asked to account for the fact that he had downloaded kiddy-porn
from the Internet?

Recognising the challenge, I was about to give the ISBN of the previous one
(this one was never finished) but that would reveal my ID and defeat the
voluntary anonymousness of Newsnet.!

"anonymousness"? I assume you meant anonymity. I've never seen a sentence
end with a full stop followed by an exclamation mark before, and I have no
idea what 'Newsnet' is.
Shouldn't a supposed author have at least a vague understanding of written
English?

Dead right, Kwyj, and should never hit the keyboard after hitting the juice!
You are so right about the punctuaion and of course I meant Usenet! It's all
the worse since I currently earn a crust editing! But then I'm working, and
on Usenet I'm usually wound down (this time obviously too far down!) and
relaxing. Criticism accepted nonetheless.

I expect that you curl up in horror every time a poster types 'your' when
they meant 'you're'. I certainly do. It's the most common error in the ngs I
subscribe to.

The title of the thread has also survived, as it must else it breaks...

Well, it is perfectly true and what's more it was the Commonwealth Bank,
from whom such reasonableness was a matter of surprise, but then I was a big
customer (read borrower!)

You don't even have to visit a Korean site: years ago I was inexplicably
overwhelmed by Korean spam, in Korean. Very hard to filter. Mailwasher was a
great help eventually.

Yes, it was all titled in Korean! In the end I simply changed my email
address, and since then I am very guarded about who I give it to! But when
the first book was published I actually gave my email addres in it and
invited readers to try emailing me. Many did! Fortunately no-one said 'What
a load of rubbish!'. Somehow, 1996 was a gentler time...

As I earlier said, J, that book was intended as a follow up to one I had
published in 1996 (it was then about 5 years later and much had changed).
For various reasons I did not proceed with it.

Okay, I shall modify my curiosity to the /previous/ published book :)
Just wondering what aspect of online porn your were dealing with?

It was the internet generally, J. Remember, in 1996 it was not yet widely
known by Joe Public, and those that did know were marvelling. I don't of
course count the early military networks or nerds like us. The follow up
book would have been how the net has developed, good and bad, the porn
obviously being part of the bad, plus scams, spam and the rest! I finally
concluded that there was not really the market for a follow up. But in 1996
it was a very different matter...

Yes, a very different world we live in now - that goes a thousand-fold
for the Internet.
