Neither did I... I assume it is this:

"VDL Mode 4 (VDL4) is a digital data link designed to operate in the VHF
frequency band using one or more standard 25 KHz VHF communications
channels. It is capable of providing digital communications and
surveillance services between a combination of mobile stations (aircraft
or ground vehicles), as well as between mobiles and ground stations. It
is characterised by its ability to exchange short repetitive messages
with the exchange managed by a number of protocols."

Heard of APRS ?

Well planes have APRS as well.

+ ADS-B on 1090 MHz
+ ACARS on 131.550 MHz
+ Satellite data reporting via inmarsat
+ VDL4 - VHF time slotiing (more the USA)
