Premiere Mike Rann has been criticized of dictatorship. Read the
article here:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PREMIERE Mike Rann, has been accused of attempting to control
media, by The Advertiser's senior editor.
Melvin Mansell last week likened the Premiere's attempt to stifle
media, to the Chinese Government's censorship and freedom of speech
issues, by accusing Mr Rann of attempting to stifle the Opposition
Leader Martin Hamilton-Smith's vision for the future of the state on
891 ABC Adelaide.
The senior editor of Adelaide's major newspaper, The Advertiser,
criticized the Premiere for taking exception to The Advertiser's
coverage of the Liberal plan for the CBD's northwestern fringe; which
has as its masterpiece, a new multipurpose sports stadium on the city
railyards. This plan is at direct odds with Mr Rann's plan to build a
$1.7 billion hospital on the same site.
Melvin also talked of Media Mike's well-established media policy of
blaming The Advertiser when someone dares raise an idea which
contradicts the Government line. Mr Rann also boldly declared that The
Advertiser's coverage was "extraordinary" because the newspaper was
"backing Martin Hamilton-Smith".
Mr Mansell stated "The truth is The Advertiser does believe Adelaide
needs a new world-class stadium, but, as Mr Rann should be acutely
aware, this does not mean the newspaper stifles debate."
