Got my new Icom R5 not long ago and it's going to be a keep, looking
for something else to add to my collection though. I'm looking for
suggestions on a good quality receiver (better than the R5) so I can
continue my radio collection, needs to be a good DX'ing.

Ideas?

If you want a good HF receiver at a very reasonable price, have a look at
the Icom R71A.
Their performance has always been up there with many of the newer receivers
(and better than some) and you can pick them up now for around the $300
mark, which has to be a very good price.

A few accessories can help your reception and increase your enjoyment if
you're lucky enough to still find them, such as

- High Stability Xtal Osc'r (CR-64) if you're interested in utility
monitoring or digital modes,
- SSB filter (FL-44A) to replace the cheap ceramic filter that they come
with,
- Narrow filter - select from either 250Hz FL-32 (CW) or 500Hx FL-63 (CW
&/or digital
modes)
- FM unit (waste of money now that the VK3RHF repeater on 29 MHz is quiet)
- Voice synthesizer unit (IC-EX310) very useful for the visually impaired
operator
- Remote Controller Unit
- IC-EX309 Computer interface unit

There are always several to choose from on either eBay or VK Ham, so have a
look. You'll save yourself some money & get a darn good receiver into the
bargain. Sure, they're no RX-340, but hey, they're $300 not $6000!
