I did a few trips to the Northern Rivers and Tweed Coast areas of late
and noticed the Police are no longer using their old UHF channels
so I took my 245XLT scanner which has the "Police" service scan set for
12.5KHz
and I came up with these freqs

Lismore is on 469.8625
the rest are heard from the Pacific Hwy only are just a guess
Byron Bay area
469.1375
Murwillumbah
468.7375

that's all I have at the moment, but I will be going down that way a bit
more so I'll keep looking to find all I can
they all seem to be narrowband so these areas all have narrowband
digital capable radios

Sounds bad!

But the VHF channels are still active.

I have always been under the impression that the local UHF channels
were for metro cars visiting.....we get a lot of them.

how does changing freqs mean the police are going to be going digital in
country areas ?

What sort of radios do the police cars have in these areas ?

The frequency change along with more repeaters mean they will be
changing over to UHF, and with the UHF system comes the digital system
although this would still take a few years I suspect

The outer Brisbane areas all have the digital capable radios and the
system is in place but they are still analog

a few years ago there were beat Police in Morayfield using the XTS-5000
handhelds

Well I suspect newer vehicles operating in these areas would be fitted
with the new Motorola digital radios and some probably also have older
80Mhz VHF radios for areas not yet covered by UHF repeaters

ah ok cool thanks Kev i'll make a note in my QLD folder so i'm a bit more
aware of whats outside my own state

and as I said from what i've read on the scannsw forums from those who know
more than me on this topic country won't be going digital for a while(fully
anyways) as they are apparently trying to get rid of vhf and move that onto
UHF which would be one big job in itself

The frequencies in the Northern Rivers district of NSW have been
reallocated to these inbetween 12.5khz so as to avoid
intereference from the Queensland Police Digital system, both
current and future. I monitored these frequencies from Casino
and they remain analogue transmissions.

A number of Tx sites on both sites of the border penetrate a
fair way into the other state eg Byron Bay, Springbrook etc.
I think you find that both police services have co-ordinated
their frequency allocation and siting to take this into account.

There are no plans for the NSW country police frequencies to
convert to digital for the forseeable future, as I think it is
generally understood that the 78Mhz allocation is more
effective for the distances involved between towns etc. UHF
seems to be installed in large country towns for the purpose
of visiting metropolitan cars attending the area for whatever
reason.

I do notice most of the Police cars I pass have both VHF and UHF antennas
I would assume that the number of new UHF sites would indicate that they
intend doing away with the Mid VHF at some stage

it took several years to do in QLD
