It will work, as long as youdon't want to listen to the police in SA,
as they run digital encryption.

Well how does the BC780XLT tune into the SA Police? As far as i know, the
specs on the BC250D are pretty much the same as the 780xlt, i could be
wrong, but as far as i can gather they're the same.

cheers

except that the 250XLT has the ability to decode digital signals with
the use of an additional decoder card, this card costs more than half
what the radio costs, and is an additional cost to you
and it only decodes APCO25 digital, not sure what the SAPOL use for
digital and I think they use encryption as well

Damn, this gets more confusing everytime. Thats the first ive heard that
SAPOL use a digital encryption. I've heard that the 780XLT hooks into SAPOL
no worries, so that particular scanner must have a decoder card built in

where did you hear that a 780 can hear the Police?
it will work on the SAGRN,
the 780XLT is not a digital capable scanner
the 785XLT is, but again it needs the additional card to decode the
digital

The top paragraph says that it follows users on the SAGRN, i mis-understood

also. This is all very new to me. Dont spose you know what encryption SAPOL

Give it a rest Nick. Your chasing your own tail thinking you can listen to
the SA cops. The only way to listen is with a Motorola branded digital
trunking two way radio, with the correct encryption card, with the
encryption card registered on the Police system, with the correct encryption
key/s loaded into it, plus another couple of factors.

Encryption changes on a manufacturer to manufacturer basis. i.e. Motorola
encryption is proprietry based which means only they manufacture it for
their radios (and Transcrypt radios), it will not work in any other radio,
and no other manufacturers encryption card will work in a Motorola radio.

The encryption system itself is not all that secretive, as there are only a
small amount of Motorola encryption standards, but the keys (the vital part)
are kept under extremly high security. Without knowing the a corrupt copper
(read: corrupt radio tech) who knows the valid key (and is willing to sell
it), and without having the encryption card registered on the encryption
database you have no hope in this world of listening to the coppers.

Give the coppers a rest, and go find something else to listen to. There is
heaps more on the SA GRN and on the PMR and other trunking bands.

I'll just say it once more in case you haven't read this previously "YOU
CANNOT MONITOR THE SA POLICE WITH A SCANNER"

Is that clear?

If you do want to listen to them, you will need to either join the coppers
or go and spend some lengthy time in the waiting room at your local Police
station, listening to the station radio.

No, but you will not be able to crack it in a lifetime of trying.....even if

Good luck.......Dunno what you want to actually do,but even if your mate
knows the bloke who invented the bloody encryption there is no way on God's
green earth that it can be listened to on a scanner. What a digital scanner
can do tho is hear normal apco25 digital transmissions, that are NOT
encrypted. Suggest you do a google search and see what you can find. The
Realistic Pro-96 is a good digital scanner, available to import from the US.
It is the only other digital capable scanner apart from the Unidens at this
point in time. And before you ask.....There are no other manufacturers that
have radio's that decode encrypted digital systems. Are you interested in
the way they are encrypted or are you just seeing if you can listen in to
the coppers?? Just interested, Cheers..

I use to love hearing the action of the police, hence the reason i want a
new scanner. But now i get further into it, i'm interested in the way these
systems are encrypted. I'm not really interested in hearing taxi's or anyone
on the SAGRN except for sapol.
Post by Johnny Fairplay

Damn, thanks for your help. My mate apprantly knows a guy who was involved
with installing the sapol system, he's gunna try and rack his brain and
hopefully find out some more information on their encryption.
Cheers.

Well if that's the only reason you would be better off saving your money old

You can sit in the station and listen to the radio over the indoor
loud speakers... don't forget that idea.

But no, you can't listen. They don't want you to, thats why they have
the encryption.

I dont plan on cracking it. I was just interested to see if scanners are

Ok, you want to find out?? There is no decoder card available.
It takes 22 hours with a super computer to decrypt the encryption code
even before you can listen, and considering they probably use OTAR
that changes every day, you have bucklies chance.

The 780 is not a digital capable scanner
The SA Police are on the sagrn
The SA Police use a digital system
The SA Police use digital encrypted system
The digital capable scanners will not let you hear the police. That's
it.

oh well, its a great scanner for SA GRN, as it doesn't need the
control channel to trunk.
Looks like its on to EBay then.

What because you can't hear the cops any more??? There is so much more
to listen to on radio, why concentrate on the cops. What about the
other emergency services?? What about security, planes, trains??

True, there is a lot more to listen to. You dont need a digital scanner to
listen to planes, trains and security though, surely. Infact, this little
crappy scanner i have now, picks up the airport down here, and i'm sure if i
looked hard enough i could pick up security
